About

The Barcode Boy is a hardware accessory for the Game Boy Classic. The peripheral was developed by Sofel and released by Namcot (a Namco brand name) in 1992. It was only sold in Japan. The Barcode Boy was almost exclusively sold in a bundle with a game (Barcode Boy Set 1 and Barcode Boy Set 2), as the hardware cannot be used on its own. The stand-alone version shown here was only sold in very limited quantities.; The device attaches to the Game Boy and enables the Game Boy to scan barcodes. Games such as Monster Maker: Barcode Saga can be used with the Barcode Boy. Scanning the physical game cards gives the player the ability to customize characters and battle opponents on the Game Boy. There was also merchandise available with additional barcodes, unlocking additional features in the games.
